The Porcellio laevis story keeps adding chapters. It started for most people with the Dairy Cow, the black-and-cream workhorse, then came the Giant Orange, and the Snow White is the same tough species again with the pigment bred right out. What is left is a clean, near-pure white woodlouse that throws real contrast against dark substrate and leaf litter. Plenty of "white" isopods actually read grey or off-cream; a well-kept Snow White holds a clean, snow-like tone, which is exactly where the name comes from. The appeal is the trade-off it does not ask you to make. You get a striking, almost designer-looking morph on a species that is close to bulletproof, breeds like it is going out of fashion and forgives the kind of husbandry slips that would sink something delicate. They are big for a common isopod, up to around 20 mm, fast, busy and often out in daylight, so they work as a display animal as much as a clean-up crew. For a first step into showy morphs without the demanding care that usually comes attached, this is one of the easiest recommendations I can make. Like all Porcellio, the Snow White cannot roll into a ball. Faced with trouble it backs into cover or simply outruns it, relying on speed rather than armour, and that restless, surface-active habit is part of what makes the colony fun to watch. It is a hungrier animal than the pill woodlice too, with a real appetite for protein, which shapes how you feed it. Housing is undemanding. A six to ten litre tub with a clip-lock lid and cross-ventilation on both sides suits a starter group. Keep a moisture gradient rather than a uniformly wet floor: roughly three-quarters of the tub lightly damp, a quarter left drier, with good airflow over the top. These are adaptable across normal room temperatures and do best at 20 to 26°C; a heated room carries them for most of the year, and a small heat mat on a thermostat at one end keeps them breeding through winter. Give them a living base of flake soil, rotted hardwood and organic topsoil at least five centimetres deep; I would avoid a plain coco-coir base, which holds water but offers nothing to eat as it sits there. Top the substrate with a thick layer of leaf litter, cork bark for cover and a permanent calcium source such as cuttlebone or crushed eggshell, which matters doubly on a white animal because clean moults keep the colour crisp. On food, leaf litter and rotting wood are the always-available base, but the protein is where P. laevis parts company with the pill bugs: offer fish flake, dried shrimp or a dedicated isopod protein a couple of times a week, alongside soft veg like courgette, squash and sweet potato. Underfeed the protein and a fast, crowded colony can start nibbling its own softer, freshly moulted members, so keep it topped up. Breeding needs almost no encouragement. Give a settled group warmth, food and steady calcium and the females will carry young in the brood pouch and drop live miniatures in quick succession; a starter colony can build into a full population inside a few months. If you want the numbers, this is among the fastest breeders in the hobby, which is a large part of why it stays such good value.
