The surface literally repels moisture so no matter how long you run the sprinklers, the water never reaches the root zone. Why it works when watering alone hasn't Most people try to solve dry patches by watering more. It doesn't work because the problem isn't the volume of water. It's the soil's ability to accept it. Hydrophobic soil is extremely common in Australia, particularly in sandy soils, high-sun areas, and lawns that experience dry periods. Run a hose on a dry patch for 30 seconds. If the water beads up, runs sideways, or pools instead of absorbing, that's hydrophobic soil.
