For years, circular bloom-like gestures had appeared in my paintings—loose, layered, and often interpreted as florals. In this piece, working with fluid charcoal allowed that form to behave differently. The gesture loosened completely, expanding outward as fragments of charcoal dripped, scattered, and lifted across the surface. What once resembled contained blooms began to tear apart, their petal-like structures shredding and floating through the composition. In that moment, the form no longer felt like a flower at all. It became wings—fragments of energy breaking free and lifting upward. This painting opened the door to the works that followed. The explosive movement of Soaring revealed a new visual language in my work, one where chaos, rupture, and release became central themes throughout the Enduring Collection.
