Tor Hörlin's work is something that you don't come across often in the UK, unfortunately, so his name is perhaps not as well known here as it should be. In his native Sweden, and Scandinavia more generally, his work is well-loved, however, for it's open, almost child-like qualities, embracing bold colour and form. This painting of a bright orange-red sofa in a simple, airy Swedish interior is great example of his work. One also gets more and more attached to the work, and the space that it depicts, the longer that you look at it. Given the seemingly innocent subject matter, it is a painting of suprising emotional depth. It is also interesting to note that Tor's daughter, Kerstin Hörlin-Holmquist, went on to become one of Sweden's great sofa designers. Sofas clearly meant a lot to the Hörlin family.
