Sohal Tang (Acanthurus sohal / Sohal Surgeonfish) A breathtaking and highly prized marine species, the Sohal Tang is renowned for its striking silver body, bold black and white horizontal stripes, and vivid blue highlights with an orange patch at the base of the tail. Native to the Red Sea, this powerful swimmer is an exceptional showpiece fish best suited to large, established marine aquariums. Compatibility:Aggressive. Best kept with other large, robust marine species such as angelfish, triggerfish, large wrasses, and butterflyfish. Can be extremely territorial, particularly towards other tangs and similarly shaped fish. Careful planning and ample space are essential. Reef Compatibility:Reef-safe. Safe with corals and most invertebrates, while providing excellent natural algae control through constant grazing. Diet:Herbivore – primarily feeds on marine algae. Offer a varied diet including dried seaweed (nori), spirulina-based pellets and flakes, marine algae, and occasional vegetable-based frozen foods. Feed 2–3 times daily to maintain excellent health and coloration. Water Parameters: Temperature: 24–27°C Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG pH: 8.1–8.4 Minimum Tank Size: 750L Care Level:Moderate to Advanced – requires a very large, mature aquarium with excellent water quality, strong water movement, high oxygenation, and extensive open swimming space. Due to its territorial nature, it is best suited to experienced marine aquarists. Top Tip:Introduce the Sohal Tang as one of the last fish in the aquarium to minimise territorial aggression. Plenty of open swimming space, abundant live rock for grazing, and a varied algae-rich diet are essential for maintaining this magnificent surgeonfish in peak condition.
