Failing their physics class and needing extra credit, non-binary college student Andie Maddox is approached to try out a new interdimensional travel device and soon wakes up in a familiar yet unfamiliar setting. They walk outside and realize they are in a new world upon seeing two moons in the sky. Andie tries out their parents’ old house to find a young woman named Daisy visiting her own parents there instead. Along the way, Andie learns about a deadly virus that has hit Mexico and discovers a case of the virus has hit their city of Austin, Texas. Together with Daisy, the two of them try to get in touch with this universe’s version of Andie’s old college physics instructor Professor Erwin, who had built the machine that brought Andie to this new world. Unfortunately for Andie, the machine breaks down in this universe, necessitating repairs as more cases of the virus increase. As Andie begins to settle into their new life in this world, strange things happen, which leaves Andie to make a now-or-never choice that will change not just their life, but those of everyone around them.
