A Two-Year Journey When I first learned of the possibility of creating Damascus Titanium metal, it was a totally new process similar to how "modern Damascus" steel is made (as opposed to ancient wootz), but since we're using solid Titanium, a few important and difficult (even dangerous) steps are needed. Titanium Layered Metalworking Damascus Titanium is not just a metal, it's a work of art, a rare and highly sought-after composite metal that is created by layering different titanium alloys, and then heating and cooling them at specific temperatures to achieve mesmerizing patterns and colors. This process, known as "titanium layered metalworking" is not for the faint-hearted. It requires a level of precision, skill, and experience that is found only in a select few metalworkers. This process cannot be accomplished with any oxygen present! It simply will not work if any air enters the system. That means the use of noble gases or other methods to isolate the titanium layers. It's a very dangerous process that only a few metalworkers in the world have experience with. After cutting the metal to the approximate shape, the same technique that's used in our Ti KILO cube is used to mill the faces square on a CNC machine. The cube is then polished by hand to a high finish in order to showcase the mesmerizing beauty of Damascus Titanium when firing. Patience is the order of the day. The firing process requires extreme precision and skill, as the timing and temperature must be controlled precisely to achieve the desired pattern. This process requires hours of concentration for a single cube as the temperature change needs to be gradual and precise. The final product is a one-of-a-kind creation, a unique blend of durability and beauty that showcases the extreme difficulty of making Damascus Titanium. I have always been fascinated with titanium since I was a child reading about the rareness of the metal used to make the SR-71 spy plane. In high school, I had a life-changing experience when my physics teacher passed around an earring made from titanium for us each to handle. It was my first time touching this mythical metal, and I was blown away by its strength and lightness. This experience sparked a love for science in me and led me to earn a physics degree. Years later, inspired by the birth of my son, I started Esington and Trance Metals to reconnect with my passion for pure metal.
