Bakery Outlet is a new label founded by Rich Diem of Twelve Hour Turn! Solid Pony is their first release, with more on the way. Features beautiful cover art by Jacksonville artist Sean Mahan (Planes Mistaken For Stars, North Lincoln, Floor, Twelve Hour Turn, Del Cielo, etc). Members of Twelve Hour Turn and The South create jangly, "organic" rock reminiscent of early Built to Spill, Weakerthans, and Lemonheads. For fans of good hair, vegetables, and the ocean. - Ryan Murphy (No Idea Records, True North) Vinyl is archaic. Liner notes to said albums even more so. Hell, ponies themselves are antiquated, especially solid ones. Despite continued evidence that Life is indeed "gonna eat us" we keep soldering (as the Solid Pony song goes). Add some unpretentious pop style and the scenario doesn't seem quite so bleak. More and more, it's the evolution that's fascinating. These bands we form after our teens & early experiments. Which is not to take some snooty approach & say that hardcore or yelling is juvenalia, and/or that melody=validity. Instead, let us acknowledge harmony & the possibilities of sweet backing vocals. I like my Ida records. I like the idea of my friends trying different things--raw foods, downsized amps, biodiesel engines & all. Because there's not just one way. Just as Gainesville tends to overshadow our beach neighbors St. Augustine--a complete fallacy. From Don Martin 3 up to today's solid ponies. When Rich asked me to write something for Solid Pony about their album, I was a bit befuddled. I do love talking about music & projects. But I don't want to be any more part of the typical fucking consumerist publicity machines. Solid Pony uses recycled paper & soy inks on their jackets and inserts. And puts a photo of their grandfather on the lp.
