The Solid State Logic SSL Revival 4000 is an all-analogue rackmount channel strip that recreates the classic sound and workflow of the legendary SSL 4000 Series consoles. Analogue Foundation At its input stage, the Revival 4000 features the iconic Jensen JT-115K-E transformer-balanced mic preamp, the same component found in the original 4000E consoles. This delivers a combination of harmonic richness and pristine clarity, with full support for line input, pad, polarity invert and +48V phantom power. De-Esser and Dynamics The B Series one-knob de-esser, derived from the early 4000B compressor/limiter design, uses a 10:1 ratio and 7 kHz sidechain filter to control sibilance in a musical way while retaining natural tonal balance. Dynamics are handled by a discrete Class A VCA compressor based on the 4000E, with selectable soft or hard knee response, fast attack mode, and a choice of logarithmic or linear release curves. A classic gate/expander section provides additional control, also equipped with fast attack switching for tight, responsive shaping. EQ and Filters SSL has included both the Brown Knob (02) and Black Knob (242) EQ circuits, offering the choice between gritty character or refined precision. The fully parametric mid-bands allow surgical tone shaping, while the re-routable high- and low-pass filters offer 12 dB or 18 dB per octave slopes depending on the selected mode. Filters and EQ can be placed into the dynamics sidechain for advanced processing options. Routing and Workflow The Revival 4000 maintains SSL’s hallmark workflow flexibility. Engineers can re-order processing stages, including routing filters to input, dynamics and de-essers post-EQ, or inserts to the output. The unit features a dedicated balanced insert point for integrating external processors, along with an external sidechain input and full “to sidechain” functionality. Stereo and Metering Two units can be linked via dynamics sidechain link to operate as a stereo pair. Input and output metering ensures clear level management, while a line output trim provides fine adjustment to match downstream equipment. Legacy Reimagined The SSL 4000 series consoles transformed studio production from the late 1970s onward, setting a new benchmark with their punchy compression, intuitive EQ, and unmistakable mid-range clarity. The Revival 4000 distils these elements into a modern rackmount unit, preserving the defining tone of platinum-selling hits while offering the flexibility and routing options demanded by today’s workflows.
