Can you cook over it? Yes. But it takes a lot of time and works to get the ember bed to just the right heat where your steak isn’t consumed in minutes. At Solo Stove, we are about taking life’s complications and simplifying them. SO a solution that requires a lot of training and work didn’t feel right. What DID feel right was a completely optimized cooking experience that lets you get food on the grill and to the table quickly without the hassle. That’s what the Solo Stove GRILL is designed to do. The stand comes together using only six bolts and can be assembled in about five minutes. Place the Grill on the Stand without the lid. Remove the cooking grate and empty the full contents of one Grill Pack onto the charcoal grate. Light the briquettes. Replace the cooking grate, and you are ready to grill after the charcoal preheats for ten to fifteen minutes. Will the Grill be available for purchase outside of the Ultimate Bundle? The Solo Stove Grill uses our signature 360° Airflow technology to create the optimal convection cooking environment. It uses less charcoal and heats up faster than other grills so you can be ready to start cooking in just 15 minutes. It’s time to stop sacrificing flavor and enjoy a completely optimized grilling experience. How long will one Grill Pack last? Once preheated, one Grill Pack will provide the perfect cooking environment for up to forty-five minutes. Much less charcoal is required and it contains the perfect number of briquettes. How tall is the stand? The included Short Stand is 13 inches and creates a 21-inch cooking height when used with the Solo Stove Grill Body. The Tall Stand (sold separately) is 21.5 inches. This creates a cooking surface 28 inches off the ground. We recommend placing it on a hard, level surface. What makes Solo Stove Grill different than other charcoal grills? Other charcoal grills involve a lot of guesswork: measuring charcoal briquettes, getting the temperature just right, maintaining consistent airflow in the grill, etc. Solo Stove Grill is made to create the perfect cooking fire every time without the hassle of making sure your flame is just right. Our lifetime warranty guarantees your Solo Stove Grill to be free of any manufacturing defects. However, if there is a manufacturing defect that alters how your unit performs, we will happily replace it. Can the grill be used as a fire pit? The Grill was designed to provide an optimal experience for backyard cooking and is not designed to function as a fire pit. The Grill does not allow air to come through the top of the unit. This prevents the food from being consumed by the secondary burn, thus it would not produce an efficient, smoke-free flame like the fire pits. The Grill has a more shallow depth than our fire pits, providing less protection from a bonfire-sized flame. It is designed to support ideal cooking temperatures (approx. 400-500 degrees) which are much lower than the fire pits, which can sometimes reach over 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. What is the material of the stand and lid of the grill? The lid is enameled porcelain Can the grill be used without the stand? The grill is designed to be used with the stand. The bottom of the grill is tapered for the ash pan and therefore is less stable without the stand. It will function without the stand but we do not recommend it. Additionally, the bottom of the grill can become extremely hot when in use. Is the grill portable? Do the stand/legs fold? The grill is 43 lbs. and can be transported and used wherever you would like. Once assembled with just 6 bolts, the stand does not fold. How tall is the lid? Can I cook a whole bird? If you wanted to cook a turkey on the grill, you would need to use the spatchcock method. How hard is it to clean? The grill is very easy to clean. The charcoal and cooking grates are easily removable as well as the ash pan. Bar Keepers Friend can be used for the exterior. How do you control the heat? Solo Stove Grill takes the guesswork out of cooking over charcoal. There is no need to adjust the heat or airflow. The grill will let you get back to cooking with charcoal of any kind. Either traditional briquettes or hardwood lump charcoal will work great. I prefer to cook with wood, is charcoal required? The grill works great with wood or chunk wood! The heat-up time will vary when cooking with wood from the times we provide, which are based on charcoal heat-up times. How much charcoal do you use to cook? About 60 briquettes or 4lbs of charcoal will hold ideal cooking temperatures (approx. 400-500 degrees Fahrenheit) for up to 45 minutes. Solo Stove Grill Packs provide ultimate convenience and are perfectly sized for optimal Grill performance. Will the grill support a cast iron pan? What about a Dutch Oven? Yes, you can cook with a cast iron pan on the cooking grate. Though the grill is designed to cook on the cooking grate, we don’t foresee any issues with using a dutch oven directly on the coals at your own risk. Bear safety in mind when cooking directly on the coals. I usually use a charcoal chimney to start charcoal. Can you start your charcoal in this? Yes, you can certainly use a chimney. Just pour the coals in once they’re ready like normal. You may find that you need less charcoal overall. It only needs about 60 briquettes (4lbs). How long does the charcoal last? It's pretty surprising, actually. One small 4lb bag of charcoal keeps it at 400-500 degrees for up to 45 minutes solid. You can still cook burgers and steaks towards the end of that time. It's impressive. Why didn’t you make a kit that lets me convert my fire pit into something I can cook with? We’ve had many requests like this and it’s ultimately what drove our nearly two-year effort in design. Our fire pits are designed to burn hot and fast, sometimes more than 1200° Fahrenheit. As a brand, we have to keep safety top of mind, and cannot recommend cooking with such high temperatures. Can you cook over it? Yes, many people do. Can I cook low and slow? The grill is not designed to function as a smoker since the temperatures reach 400-500 degrees and stay there due to the convection function.
