Created during the Soviet Union’s Ninth Five-Year Plan (1971–1975), this Ukrainian propaganda poster promotes the government’s goal of expanding restaurants, cafeterias, canteens, and other public dining services throughout Soviet Ukraine.The red banner in the upper left reads “Ukraine in the Ninth Five-Year Plan,” while the large “45%” announces the economic target: turnover in the public food-service sector was planned to increase by 45 percent.Public dining had a larger role in Soviet life than simply providing places to eat. The government promoted cafeterias and workplace canteens as an efficient way to feed large numbers of workers and families, while communal dining also fit the Soviet ideal of moving everyday activities away from the individual household and into shared public services.
