A central principle of Structured Recall is that recognition and production are different skills. A learner may recognize vocabulary, understand grammar, and follow Spanish while reading or listening, but still struggle when trying to produce Spanish aloud. Structured Recall addresses this by making spoken retrieval part of the learning path from the beginning. Your 12-month membership includes two programs: Structured Recall — Core and Structured Recall — Expansion. Structured Recall — Core Core is the starting point and primary learning path. Each week, the tracker tells learners what to do and coordinates four parts of Spanish learning: Structured Study — progressive grammar and language study using Complete Spanish Step-by-Step Vocabulary Review — chapter-aligned vocabulary practice using McGraw Hill Language Lab Listening Practice — comprehension practice using Destinos: An Introduction to Spanish Spoken Recall Practice — original English-to-Spanish sentence-production exercises in Structured Recall — Core Core begins with a 30-week structured learning path. This first phase moves learners through the foundation of Spanish while regularly requiring them to produce Spanish aloud. After the initial 30-week path, learners can complete a second 30-week reinforcement and output mastery pass. This second phase revisits previously studied material with greater emphasis on active recall and production rather than introducing another 30 weeks of entirely new curriculum. Spoken Recall Training The most distinctive part of Structured Recall is the spoken recall loop. Structured Recall’s spoken-production exercises use a speak-first sequence: Speak → Capture → Translate → Compare → Acknowledge → Continue The learner receives an English prompt and attempts to produce the Spanish aloud before seeing the Spanish reference. The web app captures the learner’s spoken Spanish, displays an English back-translation of what was captured, reveals the Spanish reference answer, and allows the learner to compare the attempt before continuing. The Spanish reference remains hidden until after the learner attempts the sentence because the objective is to practice retrieval rather than recognition. If the learner sees the Spanish first, the task becomes recognition. If the learner produces the Spanish first, the task becomes recall. Core exercises progress alongside the grammar being studied and may include answer notes explaining important grammatical distinctions. Structured Recall — Expansion Membership also includes Structured Recall — Expansion, a larger spoken-recall training program intended for continued production practice after Core.
