Handbrake Cable from the parking brake cable circuit - right-hand side. The cable transmits travel from the parking brake control to the expander mechanism at the rear parking brake. The inner cable pulls against the outer casing, which abuts a fixed bracket, so control movement is converted into shoe expansion against the drum formed in the rear disc hat. Each rear brake is worked by its own cable, and the left- and right-hand cables are handed and not interchangeable. Right-hand drive applications; cable routing differs between left- and right-hand drive vehicles. Inner cables stretch in service and the casing eventually admits water, and a seized inner is the usual cause of a parking brake that binds on one side or fails to release fully. Renew both sides together so that effort stays balanced across the axle.
