Why This Watch Matters You can't go wrong with a classic Moonwatch. Patina is always a plus. The Full Story Omega came out with the Speedmaster in 1957, and it has been constantly updating and upgrading the watch ever since. Here we have ref. 145.0022. This reference was the successor of the iconic ref. 145.022, which debuted circa 1968. The new reference started production in 1981. In 1962, the first Speedmaster went to space on the wrist of Wally Schirra, a ref. 2998-4. Of course, the model's history with NASA did not stop there. In March of 1965, NASA officially picked the Speedmaster, certifying the watch as “flight qualified by NASA for all manned space missions” and providing all astronauts in the program with a Speedy Professional. And, of course, it was a ref. 105.012 that became the first watch on the Moon on July 20th, 1969. This example has the recognizable 42mm case with twisted "lyre" lugs and is powered by manually wound caliber 861. It retains the great Speedmaster Professional look that has been around since 1967. These Speedmasters from the 1990s offer a great value. All of the creamy patina, none of the vintage "worries" of being delicate (if you subscribe to that way of thinking). The watch is accompanied by its original Omega International Warranty card dated 96.6.11 and matching the case/serial number of the watch, of course. The case appears unpolished with light scratches. The facets on the twisted lugs are very crisp. The back of the lugs have some scratches and marks from the bracelet. The Hippocampus medallion on the caseback is very crisp. The dial is in great condition with a slight patina to the matte black surface. The hands have developed a very light patina. The lume on the hands has developed patina throughout and aged to a creamy yellow hue. There are some small spots of lume loss in both the hour and minute hands. The lume on the dial has developed patina and aged to a matching color. The bezel is in great condition. The dial, crown, case, movement, and crystal are all signed by Omega. There are some scratches on the crystal. The Omega bracelet is in excellent condition with some light scratches but no stretching between the links. The Omega warranty card has a crack in it that does not run all the way through. This watch was photographed on a 175mm/6.9inch wrist.
