Speyburn 10 Year 750ML is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky bottled at 40% ABV after a full decade of maturation in oak casks. This expression earned a Gold medal at the 2014 International Wine & Spirits Competition, reinforcing its standing as one of Speyside's most compelling values in the age-stated single malt category.Quick Facts: ABV: 40% | Origin: Speyside, Scotland | 10 Year Age Statement | Distillery: SpeyburnProduction & HeritageSpeyburn Distillery sits along the banks of the Granty Burn, a major tributary of the River Spey, and is the only distillery to draw its process water from that source. Owned by Inver House Distillers, Speyburn employs a distinctive hybrid condensing system: the wash still connects to a modern shell-and-tube condenser, while both spirit stills feed into traditional worm tubs — a setup that encourages a fuller-bodied, more characterful new-make spirit. The 10 Year expression matures in a combination of American oak ex-bourbon barrels and ex-sherry casks, allowing orchard fruit sweetness from the bourbon wood to intertwine with the subtle spice and dried fruit influence of sherry seasoning.Tasting NotesAroma: Fresh orange peel and baked apple arrive first, followed by warm cinnamon, toffee, and a thread of rubbed mint. Underneath sits a faint note of heather and new leather, adding complexity beyond simple fruit.Taste: The entry is soft and honeyed, with vanilla fudge and creamy butterscotch leading into a mid-palate of fresh apple pie, lemon zest, and cooked cereals. As it develops, green apple skin and underripe pear add a crisp, slightly tart counterpoint to the sweetness.Finish: Short to medium in length and notably drying, with oak tannins rising as honeyed sweetness fades. Lingering traces of licorice and wood shavings close things out cleanly. How to Drink Speyburn 10Neat at room temperature is the most direct route to its orchard fruit and honey character; a few drops of water can open up the cereal and citrus notes hiding beneath the sweetness. At 40% ABV, it also holds up well in lighter cocktails. A Highball with quality soda water amplifies the apple and lemon brightness. A Rob Roy benefits from the malt's toffee backbone, which pairs naturally with sweet vermouth. A Penicillin variation works here because the honey and fruit notes harmonize with the ginger-honey syrup rather than fighting the blend.Best For Introducing a friend to Speyside single malts without a steep entry cost Stocking a home bar with a reliable daily-dram Scotch Gifting a whisky enthusiast who values age-stated quality over brand hype Exploring the flavor impact of worm tub distillation alongside modern condensers Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat does Speyburn 10 taste like? Speyburn 10 delivers honeyed vanilla and butterscotch up front, transitioning into baked apple, lemon zest, and cooked cereals, then finishing dry with oak tannins and a whisper of licorice. How does Speyburn 10 compare to Glenfiddich 12? Both are approachable Speyside single malts at 40% ABV, but Speyburn 10 tends toward richer toffee and baked apple notes, partly due to its worm tub spirit stills, while Glenfiddich 12 leans lighter with pear and floral character from its copper pot stills and Solera-vatted finish. Is Speyburn 10 good for sipping neat? Yes — the 10-year maturation in bourbon and sherry casks produces enough depth and balance to reward neat drinking, though it remains light enough that beginners will find it very approachable.Where is Speyburn 10 made? Speyburn 10 is distilled at Speyburn Distillery in the Speyside region of the Scottish Highlands, using water drawn exclusively from the Granty Burn, a tributary of the River Spey. What foods pair well with Speyburn 10? Smoked salmon works well against its honeyed sweetness. Aged cheddar mirrors the toffee and butterscotch notes. Apple tart or poached pears echo the orchard fruit character. Shortbread complements the cereal backbone, and mild blue cheese provides a savory contrast to the vanilla. What sizes does Speyburn 10 come in? The standard bottling is 750ml, which is the most widely available format in the U.S. market. Is Speyburn 10 worth the price? Speyburn 10 positions as an entry-level age-stated Speyside single malt and competes directly with better-known bottles like Glenlivet 12 and Glenfiddich 12 — often at a slightly lower price point, making it one of the stronger values in the category. Why Speyburn 10?Speyburn's hybrid condensing system — shell-and-tube on the wash still, traditional worm tubs on both spirit stills — is a genuinely unusual setup that produces a weightier spirit than many Speyside neighbors running full shell-and-tube configurations. That structural advantage, combined with a decade in both bourbon and sherry wood, yields a whisky that punches above its price tier in complexity. Gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition (2006) and the International Wine & Spirits Competition (2014) back that up with independent recognition. For drinkers who want a Speyside malt with real age-statement transparency and a production story beyond marketing, this bottle consistently delivers.
