This plant typically grows to about 1-3 feet tall, forming a low, bushy mound with silvery-green, deeply lobed leaves that are soft and hairy, helping the plant retain moisture and resist drought. The striking flowers bloom in clusters, ranging in color from vivid shades of orange and pink to salmon and red, creating a multicolored display that attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators from spring through early fall. Each flower is cup-shaped, with five delicate, overlapping petals, and a prominent central column of stamens. Adapted to full sun and poor, well-draining soils, Sphaeralcea polychroma is highly tolerant of heat, drought, and rocky or sandy conditions, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and native wildflower gardens. Zones 4-8 Germination To germinate Sphaeralcea polychroma seeds, begin by lightly scarifying them, as this improves water penetration and encourages quicker germination. This can be done by gently rubbing the seeds with fine sandpaper or soaking them in warm water for 12-24 hours before planting. Sow the seeds in a well-draining seed-starting mix, pressing them lightly into the soil surface and covering them with a very thin layer of soil, as they need some light exposure to germinate.
