The Spiked Mace was designed specifically for crushing armor and breaking bones. During the Middle Ages metal armor and chainmail protected against the blows of edged weapons such as swords and arrows. Maces, however, were engineered with an imbalanced center of gravity which concentrated the force of the blow to the points inflicting damage without penetrating the armor.
