This attractive shrub is known for its dense spikes of pink flowers, which bloom throughout mid-summer, providing vital nectar for pollinators during the lull between spring and fall blooms. Also known as Steeplebush or Hardhack, this species is especially valuable for rain gardens, wetlands, and seasonally wet soils. It tolerates everything from organically rich soil to sandy substrates and grows well in full sun or partial shade. In addition to supporting pollinators, its tiny seeds are cherished by birds, including both songbirds and upland game birds. Its fuzzy stems and flower spikes add texture and colour to any native planting.
