Light on a still face In noh theatre an actor alters the expression of a fixed mask by moving the head. Tipping it down into the light is called terasu, brightening. Tilting it away is kumorasu, clouding. Nothing on the mask itself moves, only the shadows held in the carving. A brushed metallic finish makes that easy to watch. Gold is swept over a darker ground, so the high points come up bright, the ridge of the long muzzle, the crescent at the brow, the scrolled plates that flare past the ears, while the cut lines stay dark. Turn towards a lamp and the balance shifts again. It covers the brow, the eyes and the bridge of the nose, and carries on down the muzzle in a single sculpted piece, with two pointed ears standing above.
