Suzy is a brown capuchin monkey who was born into the sad world of pet primates where infants are pulled from their mothers as early as 3 days of age in hopes of having them bond with humans and become ideal pets. This practice is terribly stressful and cruel to both infant and mother. Not only do the mothers search for their infants months after they have been taken away, they will sometimes go into such a deep depression that they grieve themselves to death. And the infants are not spared from psychological damage, either. They engage in comfort seeking behaviors for the rest of their lives such as digit sucking, over grooming to the point of hair loss, rocking and tail wrapping. With a spacious natural habitat and plenty of enrichment and monkey friends, Suzy has come a long way but will never be a “normal” monkey.
