This is the return spring for the brake shoes used in the 11-inch drum brake system fitted to Land Rover Series vehicles. The spring retracts the brake shoes away from the drum aft er pedal release, maintaining correct shoe-to-drum clearance and preventing brake drag or uneven wear. A fatigued or broken return spring can result in partial shoe contact, premature lining wear, pulling under braking, or dragging brakes that cause overheating of the drum.
