MacDonnell Ranges is a cross stitch pattern. Situated near Alice Springs in the Northern Territory of Australia, the MacDonnell Ranges are formed from hard rock which is known to g eologists as Heavitree Quartzite. About 850 million years ago, the ranges' flat faces were layers of sand on the beach of a shallow sea. Aerial views are spectacular and are rivalled only by trekking by foot into some of the rugged terrain. The spectacular gum tree in the foreground is Eucalyptus rabuana.
