Springfields Myrrh is a steam-distilled essential oil taken from the gum resin of Commiphora myrrha. The aroma is warm, sweet, earthy and balsamic with a slightly spicy edge, and it sits as a base note, which is why it holds its own in a blend and gives lighter oils something to rest on. the oil's reported use goes back thousands of years to ancient Egypt and China. It is the 10 mL bottle from the Springfields 100% Pure Essential Oils range. Its everyday use is a drop or two in a diffuser blend or diluted into a carrier oil for massage, and it is the oil to reach for when a mix of citrus and florals wants something warm and resinous underneath it. Product Strengths Myrrh is traditionally used in aromatherapy as an incense note for meditation and quiet reflection. A single-species essential oil, not a blend and not a synthetic fragrance oil. Warm, sweet, earthy, balsamic aroma with a slightly spicy, resinous character. A base note, which makes it useful as a fixative that slows the fade of a blend. Steam distilled from the gum resin rather than from a leaf or a flower. It carries frankincense, sandalwood, benzoin, cypress, juniper, mandarin, geranium, patchouli, thyme, lavender, cinnamon and clove as blend partners. Always review label for full list of ingredients.Botanical Source Botanical name Commiphora myrrha. Plant part: the gum resin, the hardened sap that the tree exudes. Extraction: steam distillation. No country of origin is declared for this oil, so no origin is stated here. Suggested Use Add a few drops to a diffuser or vaporiser to scent a room, or use it as the base note in a blend. For any skin contact, dilute the oil first in a carrier oil such as sweet almond, jojoba or grapeseed; the usual guidance for adults is 1 to 3 per cent, which is roughly 1 to 3 drops of essential oil in 5 mL of carrier oil. Myrrh is a thick, resinous oil, so it pours slowly and blends more easily into a warmed carrier oil. For a bath, blend the drops into a dispersant or a carrier oil first rather than dropping them straight onto the water. Warnings Do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. This one is not a matter of opinion between references. The International Federation of Aromatherapists states that myrrh may be fetotoxic and should be avoided during pregnancy or breastfeeding, Tisserand and Young reach the same conclusion as summarised by AromaWeb, and the precaution printed on the Springfields label says plainly that it is not to be used in pregnancy. All three agree, so treat this as a firm contraindication. Not for internal use unless under qualified supervision. It carries directly that it is not to be taken internally. Always blend with a base oil, such as sweet almond oil, before applying to the body. Never apply the neat oil. Patch test on a small area of skin and wait 24 hours before wider use. Keep away from the eyes and mucous membranes. Keep out of reach of children. Keep away from open flame, sparks and heat sources. Essential oils are flammable. If you are under medical care or using essential oils with children, seek advice from a qualified practitioner first. Storage Store tightly capped in the original bottle, upright, away from heat and out of direct sunlight. Resin oils thicken further in the cold, so keep the bottle at normal room temperature rather than refrigerated. Disclaimer This is an aromatherapy product for external and environmental use.
