Dwarf Alberta Spruce and Bird's Nest Spruce are slow-growing evergreens perfectly suited to Southwestern Ontario's Zone 5–6 climate. Both thrive in full sun to partial shade with moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Dwarf Alberta Spruce features a distinctive tight cone shape and reaches modest heights, making it ideal for small spaces and containers. Bird's Nest Spruce grows as a low, rounded shrub with a characteristic depression in the center, reaching approximately 4 ft × 5 ft at maturity. Once established, Bird's Nest is drought-tolerant and very low maintenance, while Dwarf Alberta requires vigilance against spider mites—check regularly by shaking branches over white paper. Both varieties need deep watering during establishment and hot, dry spells. Water thoroughly in late fall before the ground freezes to prevent winter desiccation. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk. Feed once yearly in early spring with a slow-release or acid-loving plant fertilizer. Pruning is minimal—remove only dead, damaged, or wayward growth in late winter or early spring. Dwarf Alberta is highly susceptible to winter burn; wrap in burlap and maintain moisture until frost. Bird's Nest handles urban pollution well and is generally deer-resistant. Both benefit from good air circulation to reduce pest pressure. Avoid planting where road salt spray occurs.
