The original design dates from the 1500s in Scotland and they were used to stir porridge , broths and stews. They were usually held in the right hand and stirred clockwise . It all ows stirring to prevent sticking to the pan and the instrument . This one was made from recycled hoop pine from a 110 year old Queenslander ,sanded to 1200 grit sandpaper and wiped over with a foodsafe oil , in this case grapeseed. L 365mm, W35mm at widest point and weighing at 53 gm, it requires very little maintenance , no harsh abrasives , warm soapy water , and the occasional wipe over with any food safe oil.
