Measuring as little as 10 inches from the top of the head to the base of their tail, these tiny primates are one of the smallest monkey species. Squirrel monkeys are known to have the largest brain for their body mass among all of the world's primates. The massive brain of these animals is double the proportion of human brain. These agile primates are able to take long horizontal leaps of as long as 2 meters. Only young individuals of this species exhibit a prehensile tail, whereas adults typically use this part of their body as a prop, helping them balance. When sleeping, they bend forward while their tails are curled between the legs, covering their shoulders. These monkeys use a unique method of scent marking known as urine washing: this is when an animal urinates on its hands and then rubs it on its tail. They easily detect fruits among dense vegetation of their forest habitat due to well-developed eyesight, allowing them to recognize colors. Group members use 25 - 30 various vocalizations to communicate with each other. They also give out certain calls when foraging, threatened as well as during the reproductive season. They live in groups of up to 500 individuals! The Squirrel Monkey is thought to be one of the most intelligent species of primate and is known to have the largest brain-to-body mass ratio of all the monkey species in the world. They have incredibly good eyesight and color vision which means that they are able to spot fruits amongst the dense vegetation with ease. While feeding in really dense foliage, they are known to make a “chuck-chuck” sound to indicate their location to other members of their troop and are also known to spread urine on their hands and feet which enables them to leave a scent trail while moving about in the trees. Squirrel monkeys live in the tropical forests of Central and South America in the canopy of the rain forest. Their fur is short and close, colored olive at the shoulders and yellowish orange on its back and extremities. Their throats and ears are white and their mouths are black. The upper part of their head is hairy. This black-and-white face gives them the name "death's head monkey" in several languages. Squirrel monkeys grow to 25 to 35 cm, plus a 35 to 42 cm tail.
