Common Name St. Augustine | 聖奧古斯丁 Species Stenotaphrum | Secundatum For When Shade Tolerance is the Top Priority St. Augustine is a dense, very coarse, low-growing turf chosen primarily for its high shade tolerance. It is well suited to Southern California's varied soils and climates. St. Augustine produces thick-stemmed runners which require permanent borders for containment. Like other warm-season grasses, it becomes dormant in the winter. St. Augustine also has a faster build-up of thatching when in full sun, but has minimal thatching in shade. Dethatching is generally required every year or two depending on the amount of sun it gets.
