Hand-carved in the Val Gardena tradition, this Saint Matilda sculpture depicts the holy queen in a contemplative pose with robes expertly draped to convey volume and movement. Poly chromy shows a deep burgundy mantle over a cream dress with lavish gold finishes; the crown and robe edges are finished with patinated gold leaf. Her expression is serene and regal as she holds a model church in her left hand and a book topped by a sphere of power in her right; every detail is chased to convey piety and regality.
