Through the Stamp Act (1765) the British imposed taxes on a variety of colonial goods, including a direct tax on printed materials in the colonies that were to be produced on stamp ed paper produced in London, carrying an embossed revenue stamp. The act was met with anger and resistance, sometimes in the form of satirical fliers warning of the effects of the tax. Publishers of newspapers were heavily burdened by the tax, so much of the press became reliable allies of the burgeoning Sons of Liberty protest movement that sowed the seeds of the American Revolution.
