Ipomopsis rubra Also known as Standing Cypress, Texas Plume, Red Texas Star, Red Gilia Standing Cypress is a biennial or a short-lived perennial. You'll mainly find it in the Southeastern U.S., where it stands upright with narrow, unbranched stems and leaves that reach heights of 2 to 6 feet. During the summer, this plant produces narrow, spike-like clusters of red tubular flowers that are red on the outside, and yellow adorned with red spots on the inside. Each flower features a delicate corolla tube that flares out into a lovely five-lobed star shape. Its leaves are delicate and feathery, with thread-like segments. Standing Cypress thrives in dry to medium, well-drained soil and loves basking in full sunshine, although it can handle a bit of light shade too. When provided with the right growing conditions, it can self-seed.
