Stargunner is a 2D (with pre-rendered 3D graphics) side-scrolling shoot'em up game, with many elements similar to Raptor: Call of the Shadows. The action takes place in the far fut ure. The player controls a space ship, flies straightforward to the right and shoots various enemies (including end-level bosses). Between missions, the player can visit the shop to buy new equipment in exchange for collected money. The game has three difficulty settings and four types of missions.
