Starry Night Paratilapia bleekeri Starry Night is a dark, spotted Malagasy cichlid that stands apart from mouthbrooding African lake cichlids because it is an egg-layer. Ron’s note s that males and females look similar and that it can mix with many African cichlids without crossbreeding risk. Origin and Habitat Native Region: Madagascar Paratilapia stock in the aquarium trade. Natural Habitat: Madagascar freshwater rivers and associated habitats with cover, structure, and open swimming areas. Physical Characteristics Size: 10-12 inches. Coloration: Dark body covered in bright star-like spots; males and females can look very similar. Body Shape: Large, deep-bodied cichlid with a strong head and laterally compressed profile. Behavior and Temperament Temperament: Mildly aggressive, especially with conspecifics or during breeding. Social Behavior: Best with similarly sized robust fish; pairs can become territorial when breeding. Aquarium Care Tank Size: A 125 gallon aquarium or larger is recommended. Water Parameters: 72-82°F, pH 6.5-8.0; adaptable but needs stable, clean water. Tank Setup: Provide open swimming room, caves, driftwood or rock structure, and strong filtration.
