Roommates, friends of roommates, and propped fire doors all put a laptop within reach of people you never met. Sacramento and San Jose families send students off every August with more equipment than most of us owned at 25. This safe is the narrow, upright answer to where that equipment goes when the room sits empty. It is theft protection. We are equally plain further down about what it does not do. Call (916) 373-1900 before you order Measure the clear space under the desk first. We will tell you straight if this is the wrong size for the room. Best suited to A student in a residence hall or shared apartment who needs a laptop, a passport, and prescriptions out of reach during class hours. Not the right safe if You are protecting documents or heirlooms from fire, or storing firearms. That is a different requirement and a different cabinet. We would rather point you there. Dimensions Will it fit under the desk? Every other question about a dorm safe comes second. Here is the safe drawn to scale, front and side, with the numbers to check against the room before anything ships. FRONT +1.5" SIDE A 20" B 7¼" C 14" D 18½" INTERIOR E E E Drawn to scale. Weight is 35 pounds empty. Construction What makes the College Dorm Compact 5.0 different A dorm safe gets opened three or four times a day, not three or four times a year. Everything here is built around daily handling in a small room. 01Vertical footprint The upright shape is the reason this model exists. It slides under a desk beside a tower or into a closet corner where a wide safe never fits. 02UL-listed electronic lock A six-digit code you set yourself, with a quarter-inch steel hardplate behind the keypad to resist drilling and an internal relocker to answer a punch attack. The lock is assembled and tested in the USA. 03Battery on the outside The battery compartment sits on the exterior of the door. Swap it in ten seconds without opening the safe first, and the lock holds your code through the change. 04Two active steel bolts Steel door and body, closed by two active steel locking bolts and a steel turn handle. The gray paint finish takes being shoved under a desk and dragged out again. 05Charging pass-through Two access holes in the back corners run a charging cable into the safe. A phone and a laptop charge overnight with the door closed and locked. 06Three lined shelves Shelves at 5½, 9½, and 14 inches split the interior. The lining keeps a watch face or a phone screen from picking up scratches on the way in and out. Contents What students actually put in it The list is short and expensive. Most of what goes missing from a dorm room fits in a space this size. Laptops and tablets up to 18" Prescriptions a roommate should never reach Passport and financial paperwork Cash, watches, rings, heirlooms Cameras, drives, gaming hardware Anchoring 35 pounds walks out the door One person can pick this safe up and carry it. Securing it is not optional, and our installers say the same thing about every compact safe we sell. If drilling is allowed Four pre-drilled holes in the base let you bolt the safe to the floor or to a fixed platform. This is the stronger of the two options by a wide margin. If it is not Most residence halls prohibit anchoring anything, which is why Stealth includes a steel security cable. Loop it around a bed frame, a desk leg, or a radiator, then hook both ends inside the safe. The cable will not stop someone with tools. It stops the far more common version of the problem, where a safe is picked up and dealt with later. Getting it there At 35 pounds this ships to your door and needs no delivery crew. Our installation teams are for the 300 to 900 pound safes, and this is not one of them. Delivery and installation Before you buy What this safe does not do Stealth publishes no fire rating for this model. It is a theft-deterrent container, built to keep hands out of your belongings, and it should not be treated as fire protection for anything you cannot replace. The lock carries a UL listing. The safe itself does not carry a UL residential security container rating, and we will not describe it as one. If you need fire protection or heavier steel, tell us what you are storing and we will point you at the right cabinet instead. A dorm room usually is not the place for it, and that is a fine answer too. Measure your own space before ordering. Frequently Asked Questions What students and parents ask Will this safe fit under a dorm desk? In most dorms, yes. The safe measures 20 inches tall, 7¼ inches wide, and 14 inches deep, and you need another 1.5 inches of depth for the keypad. Measure the clear opening under your desk before you order, since desk heights vary by campus and by building. What size laptop fits inside? Laptops up to 18 inches fit. The interior gives you 18½ inches of height and 12 inches of depth, so a laptop stands on edge in the open space below the shelves. A 13-inch or 15-inch machine leaves room for a tablet alongside it. Can I secure it if my dorm bans drilling? Yes. A steel security cable comes with the safe for exactly that reason. Wrap it around a bed frame or desk leg and hook both ends inside the safe, which prevents someone from picking the safe up and carrying it off. Does this safe protect against fire? No. Stealth publishes no fire rating for this model, so treat it as theft protection only. Store the originals of documents you cannot replace somewhere else and keep copies here. What happens if the battery dies while it is locked? You change the battery from outside the safe and open it normally. The compartment sits on the exterior of the door, and the lock keeps your code in memory through a battery swap. A low-battery indicator gives you warning first. Can I charge devices while they are locked inside? Yes. Two access holes in the back corners let you run a charging cable into the safe. Devices charge overnight with the door closed and locked. Do you deliver this one to campus? This model ships to your door and needs no delivery crew, since it weighs 35 pounds. Our Sacramento and San Jose teams handle in-home delivery and anchoring for the heavier safes in the showroom, and we are glad to talk through those if a dorm safe turns out to be the wrong answer. Before move-in Send us the measurement Move-in week is the wrong time to find out the safe does not fit. Give us the dimensions of the space you are working with and we will tell you whether this is the right model or whether you should be looking at something else entirely.
