The steering column repair gaiter is a protective rubber or flexible sleeve that seals the steering column assembly where it passes through the bulkhead or column housing, preventing ingress of water, dust, and debris into the column mechanism. Deterioration of this gaiter is common on higher-mileage examples and can result in contamination of the column bearings or intermediate shaft, leading to stiff, notchy, or clunking steering. Replacing a damaged gaiter promptly prevents secondary wear to more costly steering components.
