Every once and a while you find a wine that really digs into your soul. For me, Domaine Georges Vernay's Coteau de Vernon is one of those wines. Founded by Francis Vernay in 1937, Domaine Vernay is located in the heart of Condrieu. Francis Vernay was instrumental in establishing the official Condrieu appellation in 1940, and in 1996, Christine Vernay, Francis's daughter, took over as winemaker. Considered by many to be one of the crown jewels of Condrieu, Vernay's Coteau de Vernon is produced from 50 to 80 year old vines located in the heart of the appellation. Everything in the vineyard, from care to pruning to harvest, is done manually by hand, and after fermentation, the wine is aged on fine lees for 12 to 18 months in barrel. A complex and elegant wine, and I believe it to be one of the finest expression of Viognier anywhere in the world. The wine's aroma leaps out of the glass with ripe peaches, nectarines, fresh and candied grapefruit, and exotic fruits full of citrus blossoms, spices and wood. An absolute banger if there ever was one. 14.5% ABV
