Stephania erecta is one of the world's most extraordinary houseplants. Rising from a sculptural, potato-like caudex, its delicate vines produce perfectly round, parasol-shaped leaves that appear to float effortlessly above the plant. Both architectural and beautifully unusual, it's a true collector's specimen that never fails to attract attention. Native to the seasonal forests of Southeast Asia, Stephania erecta follows a natural annual cycle. Fresh shoots emerge from the woody caudex in spring before unfurling elegant circular leaves throughout the growing season. As autumn approaches, the foliage gradually yellows and dies back while the plant enters its winter dormancy. This is completely normal, with healthy new growth emerging again the following spring. Although its appearance is wonderfully exotic, Stephania erecta is surprisingly straightforward to grow once its natural rhythm is understood. Place it in a warm position with bright, indirect light and water when the compost has partially dried.
