The hoop, the web and the feathers Dreamcatchers began with the Ojibwe of the Great Lakes, a small hoop of bent willow strung with a loose web and hung near a sleeping child. This design takes that hoop, gives it a toothed rim and a fine woven net, then sets a wolf through the middle of it, head and neck in profile with the muzzle lifted in a howl. Three long feathers and a beaded strand hang from the lower edge. All of it is one flat black, and the wall shows through every gap in the weave. A voice that carries Howling is how a scattered pack stays a pack. Wolves range over territory far too large to keep each other in sight, so an animal a day's travel from the others can find them by voice alone, and individual wolves are distinct enough in pitch and phrasing to be told apart.
