STIHL SAE 30 Engine Oil - 4-Stroke Engine Oil for Petrol Lawn Mowers and Garden Machinery STIHL SAE 30 Engine Oil (part number 0781 309 2002) is a genuine OEM lubricant formulated for 4-stroke petrol engines in garden power tools. Blended from highly refined mineral base oils with a performance-enhancing additive package, it meets the API SJ/CF dual performance classification and is suitable for use in all garden conditions. Compatible with STIHL petrol lawn mowers, tillers and other 4-stroke garden machinery, this oil provides consistent lubrication of engine internals, supports low oil consumption between service intervals and resists deposit formation at normal operating temperatures. Available in 600ml and 1.4L from Gustharts, an authorised STIHL dealer with UK stock ready to ship. This is a 4-stroke engine oil. It is not suitable for use in 2-stroke engines. Always check your machine's operator manual for the correct oil grade, specification and service interval before use. Key Features Genuine STIHL OEM oil — formulated to match STIHL 4-stroke engine requirements for fit, performance and additive compatibility SAE 30 single-grade viscosity — consistent film strength at standard garden machinery operating temperatures API SJ/CF dual performance classification — meets requirements for petrol and diesel 4-stroke engine types Highly refined mineral base oil with performance-enhancing additive package for ideal lubrication and low consumption All garden use conditions — suitable for the full seasonal range of domestic and professional garden tasks Available in 600ml and 1.4L — sized for single-use top-ups, seasonal changes or multi-tool maintenance Part number 0781 309 2002 — also referenced as 07813092002 and 0781-309-2002 across ordering systems Technical Specification Brand STIHL Product Type 4-Stroke Engine Oil Viscosity Grade SAE 30 (single-grade) Performance Classification API SJ/CF Base Oil Highly refined mineral oil Part Number (600ml) 0781 309 2002 (also: 07813092002, 0781-309-2002) Available Sizes 600ml; 1.4L Engine Compatibility 4-stroke petrol engines only. Not for use in 2-stroke engines. Part Type Genuine OEM Consumable Understanding SAE 30 and API SJ/CF SAE 30 refers to the oil's viscosity grade as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers. SAE 30 is a single-grade (mono-grade) oil, meaning it has one consistent viscosity rating rather than a cold-start and operating-temperature range. Small, air-cooled 4-stroke engines — such as those in petrol lawn mowers and tillers — operate within a relatively narrow temperature band and are commonly specified for SAE 30 by manufacturers including STIHL for use in conditions above approximately 5°C. API SJ/CF is a dual performance classification defined by the American Petroleum Institute. API SJ covers petrol engine performance requirements including protection against deposits, oxidation, wear and corrosion. API CF covers indirect-injected diesel engines and certain petrol applications requiring higher detergency. The dual rating confirms this oil meets both classifications, making it versatile across a range of small 4-stroke garden power tool engines. Why Choose Genuine STIHL SAE 30 - and Which Size? Genuine vs generic alternatives: Many general-purpose engine oils are multi-grade (such as SAE 10W-30 or 5W-30), formulated to perform across a wide range of temperatures for automotive use. For small, air-cooled garden machinery engines operated primarily in the warmer months, STIHL specifies SAE 30 to match the thermal characteristics and internal clearances of their 4-stroke engines. A generic multi-grade will not necessarily cause harm but does not guarantee the same additive compatibility or film consistency as the STIHL OEM formulation. Using genuine STIHL oil maintains your machine's warranty and ensures the additive package matches STIHL's engine metallurgy. 600ml vs 1.4L: The 600ml bottle suits a single seasonal oil change on most STIHL petrol lawn mowers, where typical sump capacities run between 400ml and 600ml depending on model. The 1.4L is the better value choice for professionals and grounds teams servicing multiple machines, or for anyone wanting a reserve on hand between maintenance intervals. Important Use Guidance Not for 2-stroke engines. SAE 30 is a 4-stroke engine oil. Using it in a 2-stroke engine — such as a STIHL chainsaw, brushcutter or hedge trimmer — will cause serious engine damage. STIHL HP or HP Ultra oil is required for 2-stroke engines. Check your machine manual. Oil capacity, recommended grade and service intervals vary by model. Always confirm the correct specification before topping up or completing an oil change. Dispose of used oil responsibly. Used engine oil is classified as hazardous waste. Take it to a designated used oil collection point at your local civic amenity site or recycling centre. Do not pour down drains or onto the ground. Storage. Store in the original sealed container, away from heat sources, direct sunlight and children. Also Known As STIHL SAE 30 Engine Oil is also referred to as 4-stroke engine oil, 4T oil, lawn mower engine oil, garden machinery oil and small engine oil. For correct identification and ordering, always use STIHL part number 0781 309 2002 — also formatted as 07813092002 and 0781-309-2002 — to confirm you are receiving the correct genuine OEM product. Often Replaced Alongside When completing a scheduled oil change or seasonal service, it is worth checking and replacing related maintenance items at the same time: STIHL spark plugs — recommended for replacement at standard service intervals STIHL air filters — inspect and replace as part of routine 4-stroke engine servicing Sharpening and maintenance tools — keep blades and cutting equipment in service condition alongside engine maintenance Explore More STIHL Spare Parts STIHL Parts Finder STIHL Machinery FAQs Is STIHL SAE 30 engine oil suitable for 2-stroke engines? No. This is a 4-stroke engine oil. Using it in a 2-stroke engine will cause serious damage. Use STIHL HP or HP Ultra oil for 2-stroke engines. What is the part number for STIHL SAE 30 engine oil? The UK part number is 0781 309 2002, also formatted as 07813092002 and 0781-309-2002. What sizes is STIHL SAE 30 engine oil available in? Available in 600ml and 1.4L from Gustharts. The 600ml suits most single-machine seasonal oil changes; the 1.4L is suited to multi-machine maintenance. What does API SJ/CF mean on engine oil? API SJ covers performance requirements for petrol engines — deposit control, oxidation resistance and wear protection. API CF covers certain diesel and petrol applications requiring higher detergency. Dual SJ/CF classification confirms the oil meets both standards. Can I use a 10W-30 multi-grade instead of SAE 30? Some multi-grades are compatible — check your machine manual first. SAE 30 is the grade STIHL specifies for their 4-stroke garden machinery engines in conditions above 5°C, and the OEM formulation is matched to STIHL engine metallurgy and clearances. How much oil does a STIHL petrol lawn mower take? Typical STIHL petrol mower sump capacities run between 400ml and 600ml. Check your machine's operator manual for the exact capacity before topping up or changing the oil. How often should I change the oil in a STIHL petrol lawn mower? STIHL typically recommends an oil change after the first 5 hours on a new machine, then every 25 operating hours or annually. Check your machine's manual for model-specific service intervals.
