The moving band of light in Tiger Eye — chatoyancy, from the French for cat's eye — comes from parallel fibers replaced by silica while keeping their structure. Rose Quartz. Rose Quartz is a member of the Quartz family; its pale pink comes from hair-like fiber minerals too small to see. Clear Quartz. Clear Quartz crystals are six-sided with six-sided points, usually dense and milk-colored near the base, growing clear toward the point when pure. Green Aventurine. Aventurine is quartz with inclusions that give it color; Green Aventurine's come from fuchsite mica, made green by chromium — the same element that makes emeralds green. Dumortierite. Dumortierite is an aluminium borosilicate, deep blue to violet, most often found as fibrous masses running through quartz. Amethyst. Amethyst is quartz with iron inclusions that give it its color; the most coveted deep purple comes from Uruguay, though some Brazilian amethyst rivals it. Howlite. Howlite is a calcium borosilicate, naturally white with grey or black web-like veining — discovered in Nova Scotia in 1868 and now mostly from California. Hematite. Whatever its color — red, brown, black, grey or silver — raw Hematite always leaves a red streak, and it is why Mars is called the Red Planet. Care Tiger Eye: Long hours in strong sun can dull the golden band over time; keep it out of the window when it is not with you. Sodalite: Sodalite is softer than quartz and will scratch; avoid long soaking, salt and acids, which attack its calcite patches. Clear Quartz: Clear Quartz can hold energy, so it does need to be cleansed — with sage or moonlight. Amethyst: Amethyst's purple fades with long hours in direct sun — it is the stone Vero uses to teach the rule. Howlite: Howlite is soft and porous: store it apart from other stones, do not soak it, and keep it away from salt water — dyed pieces can bleed when wet and may fade in the sun.
