Outside the harbour wall the sea does whatever it likes. Inside it the fishing boats barely move at all. The stone quay holds the whole scene close together: a clock tower at one end, terraced cottages climbing the hill behind, masts standing still against the sky and water flat enough to double everything above it. Ropes, fenders and creels are stacked along the edge, and somebody has left a bicycle leaning against the wall. The terraces are where the work is. Rows of windows and roof slates that look identical until you start matching the light falling across them, at which point they sort quickly and the rest follows. The quay is a strong horizontal to build from and the boats fill in below it. Calm and orderly, with a clear structure running through it, which makes it a sensible one to hand to somebody who has not finished a 1000 piece puzzle before.
