Youngsters who need inspiration can use Storybook Maker to write and illustrate their own storybooks. Storybook Maker has clear spoken directions so that kids need not know how to read in order to operate it. Children begin by selecting a picture background; then they click on icons to add clip art to a scene. Often a picture clip has an associated sound effect. Kids can also create their own art or a story in the Make Pictures section. When they're ready to write, children click the cursor anywhere in the illustrated screen and begin typing. While the program has no spell checker or thesaurus, text can be adjusted for size, color, and type style. Kids can also have a voice read aloud any of their written text.
