The twist in the stem isn’t decorative in the ordinary sense. It’s formed by hand while the glass is still hot, requiring the glassblower to keep the pattern uniform and straight w hile simultaneously building the foot and opening the rim. Three distinct techniques, all happening in sequence, each one demanding its own level of mastery. Light refracts through the twisted stem in a way a plain stem never could.
