Serotonin also requires the essential amino acid tryptophan as well as several cofactors such as Vitamins B6, and magnesium to be efficiently produced. Another “calming” neurotransmitter is GABA (gamma-amino butyric acid) made from the amino acids taurine and glutamine. GABA sends chemical messages through the brain and the nervous system and reduces stress by preventing nerve cells (neurons) from becoming over-excited, especially when horses are exposed to new environments, loud noises, and/ or transport. GABA plays an important role in improving coping and response to stress, enabling horses to have better understanding and discernment of new environments and or situations.
