Zebra finch Zebra finches are seed eaters that live in arid and semi-arid habitats. Rainy periods send them into a breeding frenzy, in anticipation of the feast that is to come. Th ey live and travel in large social flocks of up to one hundred birds. While they can be found across much of Australia, they are commonly found in the desert. When I lived in remote central Australia, I loved sitting on my verandah with a cup of tea, watching a flock of these tiny birds flit from the tree in my yard to my neighbour’s and back again.
