This contemplative study forms part of the Atonement series and portrays the tragic aftermath of Medusa’s death at the hands of Perseus, focusing not on triumph, but on remorse and moral consequence. Rather than dramatizing violence, the composition centers on Perseus’s inward sorrow and Medusa’s final, haunting gaze—directed beyond the earthly realm toward the unknown. Executed on river stone and measuring 15 × 24 inches (38 × 61 cm), the work’s textured surface enhances the gravity of the subject. The physicality of the medium reinforces themes of permanence, burden, and fate, echoing the irreversible weight of Perseus’s actions. Classical anatomy and restrained gesture underscore the emotional restraint of the scene, allowing grief and reflection to emerge through posture rather than narrative excess. Study for Atonement invites the viewer to reconsider myth through a human lens—where heroism is inseparable from regret, and destiny carries moral cost. It serves as both a preparatory work and a complete meditation on accountability within classical mythology. The original artwork has been acquired and is held in a private collection. Show more
