Stuttgarter onion is a classic German storage onion long valued for its reliability, strong flavor, and exceptional keeping quality. Also known as “Stuttgarter Riesen” or “Stuttgar t Giant,” this old variety originated in Germany and became a favorite for its flattened golden bulbs, dependable yields, and ability to store well long after harvest. It remains one of the standard yellow storage onions grown by gardeners who value flavor over sheer size. In our trials, Stuttgarter performed exactly the way a good keeper should. The bulbs were not the largest in the field—as is often the case with onions bred for storage—but they cured beautifully and lasted clear into the next season with very little loss. Their thin necks and firm skins help protect against moisture and rot, making them especially dependable for winter use. The bulbs are slightly flattened with golden-brown skin and white flesh inside, offering a strong, rich onion flavor that sweetens nicely in cooking. Excellent for soups, roasting, storage, and everyday kitchen use, Stuttgarter is the kind of practical old variety that earns its place year after year—not flashy, just dependable.
