Being a huge fan of Czech and German Pils and Biere De Garde we wanted to create a beer that took inspiration from these styles but is still very much a barrel fermented ale using our process. We understood that we needed a more flavourful base malt backbone to work with the oak, so couldn’t use traditional pilsner malts, instead deciding that a heavy dose of munich malt would provide what we needed. Once the base malt issue was solved we decided on a traditional pilsner hop variety and hopping regime to finish out the beer. This beer is certainly nothing like a traditional pilsner leaning more towards Biere De Garde with slightly more bitterness, but still very drinkable and unique in its own way.
