Originating in tropical America, Sugar Apple has baseball-sized fruit that tastes like sweet custard with hints of mango and pineapple. The unusually shaped, segmented fruit separa tes easily for eating when fully ripe. Within each segment is the sweet custardy pulp and one black seed. Sugar Apple blooms in spring and summer and it’s beneficial to hand pollinate to enhance fruit set. The sugar apples are harvested in fall. The tree starts fruiting early at just one or two years old. Grow in full sun in the garden or landscape in tropical zones or in a container in northern zones and allow the plant to summer outside.
