Buttonbush is a great plant for fall interest. Proven Winners has come up with a new Buttonbush called 'Sugar Shack'. Buttonbush has long been prized as a native, but it was way too big for most landscapes. Not anymore! We've cut the size in half and added colorful red fruit and glossy foliage. Add in cool looking, fragrant white flowers and you've got a delightful plant that shines from spring to fall. Growth Habit At maturity, this plant reaches 4-5' both tall and wide. Season of Interest: Early Summer. It features glossy foliage and globular heads of small, white lightly fragrant flowers highly attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies, and other insect pollinators. The flower heads are 1″ in diameter and bloom from early to mid summer. The blooms are followed by a red, spherical, compound fruit. Care Best in moist soils. May be trimmed in early spring. Exposure: Sun to Partial Shade. Easily grown in moist, humusy soils in full sun to part shade. Grows very well in wet soils, including flood conditions and shallow standing water. Adapts to a wide range of soils except dry ones. Toxicity Of course any plant material eaten in excess can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs due to increased fiber and the difficulty digesting it. This durable native plant is unbothered by deer and grows well even in very wet soils.
