The record marks the most expansive and energetic chapter yet for Nick Sowersby’s dreamlike project, retaining his signature sparkling guitars and introspective lyricism, but now built on a four-to-the-floor rhythm from drummer Lochy Funston and percussionist Rhys Grunden. The record is punctuated by the constant burbling of nature sounds captured on bike rides around Melbourne with a Zoom recorder. Sowersby says Double Magic is the most clearly realised vision of his career, sharing, “Usually I work in a fairly exploratory way but this was the strongest vision I’ve ever had for how I wanted an album to sound and feel. During lockdown my time out of the house was spent riding my bike along creeks around Melbourne recording nature sounds and they started not just finding their way into the songs, but also shaping the way I wanted the music to sound.
